And What We Can Do About It

Discovering An AngelWhen I was a kid, people would sometimes abandon their pets in the everglades, not that far from where we lived. To this day I can’t understand how anybody would leave their pet to be prey to apex predators – alligators, pythons, and Florida panthers. Even if they somehow managed to escape the predators, the extreme conditions and lack of food would mean certain death within days.I remember my Dad would donate to a group that found and cared for these abandoned animals – dog food, money, whatever he could do to help. One day I went along with him when he was dropping off supplies, and they showed us a dog they had just found. She had formerly been mistreated and abandoned in the Everglades, but she was full of love.We had an instant connection, and I asked my Dad if we could take her home. He said yes and when I looked at her, the first thing that came to my mind was that she was an Angel and that’s what I named her. Angel became part of our family, s...Francesco Vitali: A Serial Entrepreneur’s Message for Success

By Carla K. Johnson | Associated PressSEATTLE — The next big advance in cancer treatment could be a vaccine. After decades of limited success, scientists say research has reached a turning point, with many predicting more vaccines will be out in five years. These aren’t traditional vaccines that prevent disease, but shots to shrink tumors and stop cancer from coming back. Targets for these experimental treatments include breast and lung cancer, with gains reported this year for deadly skin cancer melanoma and pancreatic cancer.“We’re getting something to work. Now we need to get it to work better,” said Dr. James Gulley, who helps lead a center at the National Cancer Institute that develops immune therapies, including cancer treatment vaccines.More than ever, scientists understand how cancer hides from the body’s immune system. Cancer vaccines, like other immunotherapies, boost the immune system to find and kill cancer cells. And some new ones use mRNA, w...Grand jury report cites nepotism and lack of spending oversight among Alameda County’s ethics failures

Nearly 10 years after a grand jury report noted serious ethical concerns in Alameda County, it is still one of the only counties in the wider Bay Area that does not have an ethics policy, a whistleblower procedure, or both.A new Alameda County civil grand jury report outlines a series of ethical issues that have persisted over the past half decade, including nepotism and a lack of oversight regarding discretionary spending of public money. The report did not name names or refer to specific incidents.“Despite repeated findings from prior grand juries on ethical violations, and a specific recommendation to establish an ethics policy and reporting mechanism in 2015, the Board of Supervisors has not acted for nearly a decade,” stated the latest civil grand jury report, released on Friday. “Alameda County’s lack of an Ethics Policy and Code of Conduct specific to the county indicates that ethical government is not a priority.”Civil grand juries are composed of county residents who serve ...Sharks GM hints at draft strategy, including what he’s open to doing with No. 4 overall pick

San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier said he’s open to moving down in the first round of the NHL Draft on Wednesday but obviously doesn’t want to drop so far that the team misses out on selecting a player they feel can make a significant impact. The Sharks own the No. 4 overall selection, their highest in 25 years, and will likely have the option of choosing between Matvei Michkov and Will Smith, two elite forwards who would almost certainly be considered the team’s top prospect if taken. The Sharks could also choose to slide down a spot or two and still pick up a player they like, perhaps along the lines of forward Ryan Leonard or defenseman David Reinbacher, and acquire another draft pick for this year. Leonard has drawn comparisons to Matthew and Brady Tkachuk with his competitive, tenacious style and Reinbacher is widely considered the top defenseman available.“For the most part, we’ll have kind of our cut-offs of where we don’t want to move — down past our...SF high-rise suffers interior glass break, all roads back open
