Ask Amy: Childhood abuse affects sibling relationship

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:00:45 GMT

Dear Amy: I was raised in a very abusive environment. The abuse was very seriously physical on my dad’s side, and mentally and emotionally on my mom’s.I left home at 17. I limited my interactions with both sides thereafter. There were several times over my young adult life that horrible things were said by both parents that caused me to completely stop interacting with them. Nobody even contacted me when they died. There are other siblings involved. They seem to have just accepted the abuse, and continue to interact with one stepparent who dished out a lot of it.One sibling can’t understand why I won’t have a relationship with this person and there is a lot of underlying anger toward me because of this.I’ve been in therapy for years now.How can I make that sibling understand?— WoundedDear Wounded: Your therapy can address your need to make this sibling understand why you are keeping your distance from family members who have hurt you.A central questi...

The Commission approved the addition of 'Suonenjoen mansikka' as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), from Finland. The name ‘Suonenjoen mansikka' is used for garden strawberries grown in North Savo, Suonenjoki and its neighbouring municipalities. The ‘Suonenjoen mansikka' is completely red, juicy, and velvety soft in the mouth, and must be sweet and aromatic.Suonenjoki has a long-standing tradition of strawberry cultivation: In 2016, there were celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the ‘Suonenjoen mansikka'. And over the centenary, it has become an established term in Finnish culinary culture. The town's streets feature the strawberry in many forms: For instance, in the centre of Suonenjoki, there is a statue of girls gathering strawberries - the 1981 Mansikkatytöt statue by sculptor Raimo Heino. Equally, the Suonenjoki Strawberry Carnival, which has been held in honour of the strawberry in Suonenjoki since 1970, takes place on the second weekend of July – being one of ...

LYON, France (AP) — France has made only two changes for the Rugby World Cup match against Italy on Friday, when Les Tricolores will seek to top Pool A with a fourth straight win.One of the changes is enforced by star scrumhalf Antione Dupont’s serious facial injury in the 96-0 rout against Namibia two weeks ago.Maxime Lucu starts in his place and Gregory Alldritt comes back in at No. 8. Anthony Jelonch switches to flanker and takes the spot of Francois Cros, who is among the reserves in place of Paul Boudehent.Flanker Charles Ollivon will captain the team in Dupont’s absence, taking the armband for the 14th time in his career. Boudehent drops out of the squad but the reserves remain otherwise unchanged with Baptiste Couilloud offering cover at scrumhalf, Yoram Moefana at center or winger, and Melvyn Jaminet at fullback.Dupont rejoined the squad on Sunday, 10 days after surgery to repair a facial fracture sustained in an illegal head-on-head tackle against Namibia. Vasilevskiy remains the choice among NHL skaters for the title of best goalie in the world

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:00:45 GMT

Leon Draisaitl found it hard to answer the question of who’s the best goaltender in the world.“There’s too many good guys,” the Edmonton superstar said.Of course, he did mention one name: Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is considered the best by a wide margin. When NHL players were surveyed by their union for which goalie they’d want to win one game, Vasilevskiy was the choice for over than half of those who answered,. More than a half-dozen skaters asked last month came to the same conclusion.“He’s one of the best goalies to ever play the game — certainly one of the best athletes,” teammate Mikhail Sergachev said. “What is he capable of? Winning a Stanley Cup for us. He can do it by himself.”One problem: Vasilevskiy is expected to miss the first two months of the season after undergoing back surgery. That’s a major headache for Tampa Bay and could open the door for Nashville’s Juuse Saros or one of the two goaltenders in New York — the ...

ACC quarterbacks, sometimes under the radar, are driving success across the league

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:00:45 GMT

The ACC is off to a promising start this season with several notable non-conference victories and five teams ranked in the Top 25. A common thread is easy to find: Check behind center. The Atlantic Coast Conference, not always known for its strong cadre of quarterbacks, has 10 of the top 60 passers in yards per game this season. That’s tied with the Southeastern Conference for the most among the Power Five leagues, though the SEC and Pac-12 each have three ranked in the top 10 in that category. “As far as the ACC, there’s definitely a lot of talented guys in this league,” said linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Clemson’s leading tackler this season. And the talent is almost everywhere you look, from North Carolina’s Drake Maye to Florida State’s Jordan Travis, Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke to Duke’s Riley Leonard. “They’re playing the position at a very high level,” Trotter said. None more than Maye, the reigning ACC player of the year who̵...
