Hurricane Otis unleashes massive flooding in Acapulco, triggers landslides before dissipating

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Otis tore across Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as a powerful and dangerous Category 5 hurricane Wednesday, unleashing massive flooding in the resort city of Acapulco, sending sheets of earth down steep mountainsides, and cutting power and cell service in large swaths of the state of Guerrero. While little is known about possible deaths or the full extent of the damage — the main highway into Acapulco is impassable — experts are calling Otis the strongest hurricane in history to make landfall along the Eastern Pacific Coast. The storm had dissipated over the mountains by Wednesday afternoon, but appeared to have left a fair amount of devastation in its wake. Acapulco’s Diamond Zone, an oceanfront area replete with hotels, restaurants and other tourist attractions, appeared to be mostly underwater in drone footage that Foro TV posted online Wednesday afternoon, with boulevards and bridges completely hidden by an enormous lake of brown wate...

Rangers now focus on playing as well at home in World Series vs Arizona as they have on road

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have played only four home games over the past month, and lost all three in the AL Championship Series. Yet, there they were back at Globe Life Field on Wednesday getting ready to host Game 1 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. So is it really home-field advantage for a team that’s already matched a postseason record by winning its first eight road games?“We love playing here,” All-Star catcher Jonah Heim said before the Rangers worked out. “Throughout the whole year, we’ve played pretty good at home.”Except against the Houston Astros, which is why the Rangers went into these playoffs as a wild-card team that didn’t have home-field advantage until now.Game 1 is Friday night in the retractable-roof stadium that hosted MLB’s neutral-site World Series in 2020, the first year the ballpark opened. Texas and Arizona both had to win Games 6 and 7 of their respective League Championship Series on the ro...

Broncos defend suspended safety Kareem Jackson, arguing his hit on Packers tight end was clean

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are pleased Kareem Jackson’s four-game suspension was cut in half, but some of his teammates still contend the NFL is making an example out of the hard-hitting safety by punishing what was actually a clean hit though it looked much worse on the field.Coach Sean Payton argued Jackson’s case via Zoom on Tuesday with hearing officer Derrick Brooks, who issued the two-game reduction. Safety Justin Simmons gave a spirited, nearly five-minute defense of his teammate after practice Wednesday.Simmons suggested Jackson’s hit on Green Bay tight end Luke Musgrave was actually a legal shoulder-to-shoulder strike that appeared on the field to be a helmet-to-helmet hit. It resulted in a 15-yard penalty, his second disqualification of the season and the suspension without pay that will cost him about $279,000 in lost wages.Jackson is also expected to be fined a fifth time this season for violations of the league’s unnecessary rough...

The Boston City Council on Wednesday voted to approve an ordinance that will ban tents and other temporary shelters in the troubled area known as Mass and Cass. Mayor Michelle Wu proposed the ordinance back in August. As part of her announcement, Wu layed out a plan to give police the power to remove tents and tarps on public property and roads in cases where people living inside are offered alternative places to live, services, transportation and space to store their belongings. Months later, the City Council this week voted 9-3 in favor of approving the ordinance.City Council President Ed Flynn spoke during a city council meeting Wednesday, detailing his reason for voting “yes.”“The number one reason is these tents need to come down,” Flynn said. “They’ve been up long enough. We should never have this situation in the city of Boston again.”Wu is scheduled to speak on Thursday morning about intersecting crises of substance use disorder, mental health issues an...
