Boulder City Council approves drafting partial moratorium on Police Oversight Panel’s work

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:48:00 GMT

Boulder City Council unanimously voted Thursday evening to approve the drafting of a partial moratorium on the work of the city’s Police Oversight Panel.“I know it’s been a difficult time for the POP in recent months with some of the challenges they’ve been experiencing. It’s been challenging for the community as well,” said Mayor Aaron Brockett. “I would like for us to formalize a partial moratorium so that they can focus on making those changes to the city ordinance.”Last month, the panel voted to suspend most of its operations after former panelist Lisa Sweeney-Miran was removed by City Council over allegations of bias. Panelists agreed that their priority was to make changes to the Police Oversight Ordinance, which governs the POP, and that they would stop considering new police oversight cases and other panel work not related to the ordinance for the time being. However, the panel has continued to review police oversight cases it had already committed to reviewing.A partial mor...

Without climate change, these extreme weather events would not have happened

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:48:00 GMT

By Rachel Ramirez | CNNDroughts, storms, wildfires and heat waves: Extreme weather around the world is becoming more intense and more frequent. The toll is huge and mounting, with lives lost, homes destroyed, livelihoods stolen and economies upended. The extreme events are happening against the backdrop of a very fast-warming climate. The world is already 1.2 degrees Celsius warmer than it was in preindustrial times, and the next five years are predicted to be the hottest on record.People often want to know if an extreme weather event happened because of climate change, said Friederike Otto, climate scientist and co-lead of the World Weather Attribution initiative. But it is not a simple question. “You can’t answer this with yes or no,” she told journalists at a briefing last week. It is because climate change alters the likelihood and intensity of extreme events, she said.Otto and other scientists are using a scientific technique to transform our understanding of how this dynamic pla...

New Midwest battles brew over CO2 pipelines

The dam’s frothy tailrace holds the promise of fish that attract families and pelicans. The old-school hydro provides a tranquil scene in this town of about 2,700 residents. The town’s real energy powerhouse, however, stands on the outskirts, where the towering Granite Falls Energy plant produces 63 million gallons of ethanol annually.Ethanol production has become a vital piece of state economies across the Midwest. Forty-five percent of U.S. corn production now is destined for the scores of ethanol plants that rise from the farm fields. The industry is at a crossroads.Proposed pipelines to move carbon dioxide, a byproduct of ethanol production, would crisscross the Upper Midwest like spiderwebs.
