Opinion: There is a hidden housing crisis in Colorado for adults with disabilities

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:27:12 GMT

Every week, I read yet another news story about energized efforts afoot to provide affordable housing for generalized low-income or no-income people so that they can have a place to call home and be part of their community. These are important endeavors, but there is a hidden community sorely missing from consideration, and they face a crisis that deserves equal attention.I’m talking about people like my daughter – adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), such as severe autism, that render them our most vulnerable citizens. My daughter is just one of around 130,000 people with IDD in Colorado. Many of them cannot speak and require 24-7 support to get dressed, make a sandwich or cross the street. Adults with IDD also deserve to exist within their communities with the necessary support to live full and joyful lives.A Battlefront for Supported InclusionStarting as toddlers, the battle begins for families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilit...

CHICAGO — After sustaining a head injury during the first quarter Tuesday night, Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope passed in-game concussion protocol to briefly check back into the game, coach Michael Malone said.Caldwell-Pope played eight minutes in the second quarter but ultimately sat out the second half. His injury was designated a head contusion by the team. The Nuggets defeated the Bulls, 114-106.“I was surprised when I saw him (back on the bench),” Malone said. “I asked him, ‘How do you feel?’ He goes, ‘I’m good, I think I can go,’ so I put him in the game. And then as the second quarter was ending, I said, ‘How you doing?’ And he goes, ‘I’m OK.’ I said, ‘Well let’s get through halftime and see where you’re at.’ And it just didn’t make any sense to put him back out there. Let’s go home and hopefully get healthy and whole for our game in a couple of days...

Dozens of protesters calling for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza blocked a portion of the 110 Freeway near downtown Los Angeles Wednesday morning. Sky5 was over the scene near 3rd Street around 9:30 a.m., where protesters holding signs stood and sat on the freeway, blocking all southbound traffic. A group called IfNotNow, which described itself as a movement of American Jews supporting the end of U.S. support for Israel's war on Gaza, claimed responsibility for the protest."As Jews, we cannot sit by as the people of Gaza are starved and slaughtered our name. And as Americans, we can't let Biden & Congress send billions more in funding for Israeli war crimes.
