A daily pill may work as well as Wegovy shots to treat obesity

What if treating obesity could be as easy as popping an effective pill? That’s a notion that has long fueled hope for many of the more than 40% of Americans who are considered obese — and fueled criticism by those who advocate for wider weight acceptance. Soon, it may be a reality. High-dose oral versions of the medication in the weight-loss drug Wegovy may work as well as the popular injections when it comes to paring pounds and improving health, according to final results of two studies released Sunday night. The potent tablets also appear to work for people with diabetes, who notoriously struggle to lose weight. Drugmaker Novo Nordisk plans to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve the pills later this year. “If you ask people a random question, ‘Would you rather take a pill or an injection?’ People overwhelmingly prefer a pill,” said Dr. Daniel Bessesen, chief of endocrinology at Denver Health, who treats patients with obesity but was not involved in the new ...BET Awards delivering party-like celebration of 50 years of hip-hop and its many styles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A masked Lil Uzi Vert opened the 2023 BET Awards on a platform suspended from the ceiling and jumped into a pyrotechnic-filled kickoff performance before the show quickly turned into a celebration of hip-hop’s early years. For a show promising to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, it set the tone for a hip-hop history lesson: DJ Kid Capri walked the audience through a medley of the earliest days of New York City ’80s rap culture featuring The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” MC LYTE’s “Cha Cha Cha”, D-NICE’s “Call ME D-Nice” and Big Daddy Kane’s “Raw,” into a partial cover of “Just A Friend,” an homage to the late great Biz Markie.“I would not be in this business on the stage tonight if it wasn’t for one person,” Big Daddy Kane said introducing the song. “Rest in peace.” He invited audience members to sing along to the song’s infectious chorus and point toward a photo of Markie shows on stage. Sickened sea animals are washing up along the coast of Southern California and experts are blaming an algal bloom for poisoning the marine mammals. The Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, which is the only rehabilitation center for these types of animals in Los Angeles County, is filled to capacity and the situation, according to experts, only appears to be getting worse. While some of the thousands of sea lions and elephant seals at care centers are healthy and ready to be returned to the wild, many others are not and require special care, medication and treatment. "We’re seeing a really large algal bloom off the coast of California, specifically Central and Southern California,” John Warner, CEO of the Marine Mammal Care Center, told KTLA. “It is a toxic algal bloom that causes domoic acid within our sea lion and dolphin populations, especially.” Marine mammals poisoned by domoic acid can be prone to seizures, aggression, vomiting and foaming a...Blown out by Blue Jays, Oakland A’s are back on record-loss pace
